Diversity, EQuity, and Inclusion

Lansing is a very diverse community. I am proud of our work over the last four years to ensure Lansing is an inclusive place for all, but recognize that this is an ongoing effort that requires our city’s attention continuously. I created the first Mayor’s Diversity and Inclusion Council, and recommendations from this council led to the first City of Lansing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer. This position has been monumental, addressing implicit and explicit racial bias and the importance of using proper pronouns when speaking to others, providing trainings for departments and cabinet, assisting with the creation of a Mayor’s Executive Directive on training and working with outside groups, working with the Michigan Public Health Institute, and working with the Mayor’s Racial Justice and Equity Alliance. The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion officer will continue to ensure that the City of Lansing is a leader in diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Further, I have been very intentional about equitable growth in our city, and will continue that work for the next four years. Our Neighborhoods of Focus program, new affordable grocery store downtown, support for small businesses, and new affordable housing are just some of the ways we’ve helped all communities reach success in Lansing. Moving forward, we will celebrate our cultural diversity by supporting local nonprofits that create spaces for people of all backgrounds and identities, fielding ideas from community members throughout this work. I will propose a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Board as an official City of Lansing’s entity so we can continue to promote equity in every facet of our wonderful City.
